Good morning and happy new week! Just a quick apology to the email subscribers who had a half finished blog post drop into their inboxes this morning – bit of a technical glitch!
Today I thought I would share something I am taking part in this month. The Royal Society for Public Health (RSPH) have launched a new initiative for this month called Scroll Free September. They aim to get people off social media during September, in an effort to improve mental health and well being.
Last year the RSPH published this report which found that social media can have both a positive and negative effect on our mental health. It has revolutionised the way we can connect with people all over the world and share information. However, it discovered the net effect of being on the majority of social media platforms is currently negative – affecting sleep, body image issues, increasing feelings of anxiety and depression and FOMO (fear of missing out) being some major side effects.
Participating in Scroll Free September should help you build a more balanced relationship with social media. During the month you are encouraged to think about and reflect on what you missed and what you didn’t, as well as what you got to do instead of being on social media. See if your sleep and personal relationships change, and what effect it has on your body image and anxieties for example.
The first Scroll Free September will run for the whole month and encourages people to stop or cut down use of all personal (not work) social media accounts on platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and Snapchat.
Going cold turkey can be difficult so the RSPH has come up with a variety of options
I am going cold turkey – this is a challenge after all! I will still be posting in relation to my blog, but will not be looking through or interacting on any personal posts so please don’t think I am being rude and ignoring people!
As a Spoonie and an ostomate, I find a lot of support from the online community so am worried I will be missing out on that. However, I do feel I spend too much time mindlessly scrolling on social media and think I can find better things to do with my time so am looking forward to that aspect. I am also happy to be excluding social media from the bedroom, this definitely helps my routine at bedtime and I get a much better sleep!
Show your support and commitment to the challenge by signing up – no getting out of it then!
I would love to hear who is joining me so please do comment with how you are joining in in the comments below. I will be posting updates throughout the month on the blog. Remember you can sign up to receive an email every time a new blog post goes live by looking at the right hand sidebar on the home screen! Happy no scrolling,
