The Spoonie Mummy Reviews – Protein Water Co

With an ileostomy I have to be really careful to keep hydrated.  My large bowel is no longer in use, which is where most of your fluid intake is absorbed.  This means you need an increased fluid intake, as well as increasing your intake of sugar, salt and electrolytes in order to stay hydrated when you have an ileostomy.  Over the years I have also had issues with malabsorption.  This is dependent on which parts of your bowel are affected and can leave you lacking in vital nutrients.  I have previously had issues with not absorbing protein and low levels of potassium which have required treatment in hospital.

I was intrigued to see these protein infused waters on Twitter and thought they would be really good for me, covering the hydration element as well as giving my protein levels a boost.  I contacted the Twitter page for them and spoke to a lovely lady, Jess, and explained my story.  She very kindly offered to send me some to try out and see if they would help.

I got a bottle of each of the three flavours, Raspberry & Cranberry, Coconut & Mango and Grapefruit & Yuzu. They are 500ml bottles which is a great size and would be perfect for popping in your gym bag or taking on a walk or jog too.  I think my favourite flavour was the Grapefruit & Yuzu (even though I am not sure what a Yuzu is … if anyone knows please let me know in the comments!).  They all tasted nice though, the coconut & mango flavoured one is especially coconutty (is that even a word?!) and the one I am drinking today (Raspberry & Cranberry) is super subtle.

I like the fact that these contain no added sugar as although I am no expert, I know a lot of the protein powders you can get have a lot of rubbish in them alongside the extra protein.  This is also a great alternative for people who don’t like milkshake or struggle with dairy like I do when flaring with my Crohns.  It is made in the UK, contains no added sugar, no artificial anything (sweeteners, flavours, colours, preservatives) and each bottle contains 20g of protein and is 100 calories.  It also was awarded the Best Sports Drink in 2016 in the Food Bev Media Awards.

I have been struggling with little sleep and a bad cold on top of my arthritis flare this week and I do feel like this has given me a boost.  Today I have managed to go out and do a couple of errands and I have taken the dog out for a lovely walk, taking my protein water with me.  After not getting to sleep till gone 3am and waking up with a full bag at half 6, I feel like I should be vegetating on the sofa but I have been able to get these things done and feel like I have a pretty clear head despite being tired.  I will definitely be keeping up with the water and would recommend it to you whether you are looking for something for the gym, or like me, just need a boost to the energy levels. A hit for me, let me know how you get in with it!
